Achievement celebrated at Community Languages conference

A successful conference for teachers of community languages in mainstream and supplementary schools was held in Wolverhampton last week. The free, one-day conference 'Active teaching and learning: Practical ideas for the community languages classroom' welcomed 80 teachers from as far afield as Manchester, Leeds, Milton Keynes and Reading and provided an opportunity for colleagues to celebrate achievement and reflect on classroom practice.

Delegates selected from a menu of nine workshop options across three sessions as well as being treated to dance displays by children from local Panjabi and Gujarati schools, which brought in local families over the lunch break. The Lady Mayoress of Wolverhampton City gave a formal address before handing out Asset Languages certificates in Breakthrough Hindi, the first certificates in Hindi to be awarded here since GCSE Hindi was phased out in the 1990’s. Mr Dubey of the High Commission of India in London was also in attendance on the day.

The event, held by CILT in collaboration with Comenius West Midlands and Wolverhampton City Council, has received further support and commitment from the new Head of Equalities and Diversity for children and young people at Wolverhampton City Council who pledged to fund an upgrade in venue for 2008.
