CILT conference explores effective transition in languages

CILT’s National Transition Conference in Loughborough on 22 October is the essential event for all those with an interest in progression in languages from primary to secondary schools.

Costing only £45, the conference is designed for primary and secondary teachers, language advisers, Heads of language departments and mentors, and will include a wide range of seminars and workshops exploring themes including progression in language learning, cross-curricular approaches, practical strategies for the classroom and recording and assessment

Speakers include Carmel O’Hagan, Head of Secondary Education at CILT and project manager for the CILT 7-to-14 transition project, as well as language advisers from across the country.

The conference will include dissemination of key findings from the project’s highly successful first phase, which ran from April 2007. The project researched examples of good practice in transition, and produced successful models and new approaches to teaching and learning, particularly in KS3, to support effective transfer and transition. It is now entering its second phase, which will focus on areas including SEN, community languages, gender and intercultural understanding.

New transition pages were launched on the CILT website this month, containing a wide range of case studies, resources and other useful materials reflecting the innovative work on transition happening in schools across the country: www.cilt.org.uk/transition
