Oxford Modern Languages Forum
Language Teaching in Transition: Setting the Agenda
was a seminar organised in July 2001 by the Oxford Modern Languages Forum
at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford. Following an earlier seminar
on the transition from school to university and issues of recruitment,
it focused on teaching methodologies. Participants included schoolteachers,
university lecturers, and representatives from CILT, OFSTED and QCA. Contributions
discussed the relationship between 'communicative' and 'grammar-based'
approaches, and presented the latest research on post-16 learner strategies
and the
role of English in the foreign-language classroom. Discussion sessions
chaired by Gillian Shephard, MP, and Hilary Footitt, Chair of UCML, highlighted
the need for more interaction between schools, examining bodies, and universities.
An 8 page supplement containing an introduction from Katrin Kohl and Ernesto
Macaro (University of Oxford) and Lid King (Director of CILT) is available
