Gateways into Languages

General Overview

Gateways into Languages is funded by the DfES under the Gateways to the Professions Development Fund. The fund was established following the publication of Sir Alan Langlands' report on the Gateways to the Professions in late 2005, to support 'projects that tackle the full range of issues and barriers faced by people seeking to enter the professions through higher education'.

Gateways into Languages aims to enhance the number of entrants to the language professions, and their work-readiness, through two main activities:

  • Strand 1: Developing materials to promote the professions in schools, colleges, universities and to potential mature entrants. These are being developed by and for language professionals following the model of the successful Languages Work campaign.
  • Strand 2: Creating and piloting a national model for work placements in translation companies, based on the prototype Graduate Apprenticeship Framework (developed by Salford University and the Languages National Training Organisation in 2001-2).
  • Strand 4: Designing and teaching a language module linked to Engineering and Built Environment Degrees. In addition, two leaflets will be produced specific to Engineering and The Built Environment and the aim is to also improve collaboration between HEIs & professional bodies to inform curricular developments.

Strand 1 is being led by a partnership of CILT, Chartered Institute of Linguists (IoL) and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).

The Strand 2 partnership comprises the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), six Higher Education Institutions and five translation companies.

Strand 4's partnership comprises a number of HEIs, employers and professional bodies.

The project began in January 2007 and will end in March 2008.
