Regional Language Skills Capacity Audits

CILT, the National Centre for Languages has conducted audits in the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside, the West Midlands, the South West, the North West and the East of England, as well as in Wales. A smaller-scale, verification audit has given an insight into the situation in the East Midlands. The latest exercise, conducted in the South East of England, reported in Autumn 2007.

This research maps provision for language learning in all sectors of education, and comments on the availability of language services and of native speakers by region. Demand surveys have assessed businesses' use of languages, revealing that companies, and especially small and medium-sized companies, trading internationally, are losing business because of language barriers. Regional Language Networks have been established in most parts of the UK to tackle these issues at source.
