Skills Audit and National Modern Foreign Languages Strategy

The Wales Language Skills Capacity Audit was undertaken in 2002, on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government. Key stakeholders were contacted to establish for the first time a baseline for language skills provision and demand in Wales in an employment context.

The demand side survey conducted for the audit received responses from over 350 internationally-focused companies, who volunteered information on their use of languages in an export context. The full audit report also includes:

  • Company case studies.
  • Interviews with key decision-makers in Wales.
  • An ideal trading profile for language use.

The provision survey involved extensive contact with all phases of education, from pre-primary to adult education, as well as consultation with intermediary agencies such as Careers Wales, Chambers of Commerce and recruitment agencies.

Commercial providers of language services also provided a vital insight into demand for translation, interpreting, training and cultural briefing services in Wales. Other contributing organisations included:

In May 2002, the Welsh Assembly Government launched its National Modern Foreign Languages Strategy, Languages Count. This details ways in which the Assembly intends to ensure improved take-up and provision for foreign languages in Wales. LN Cymru, using the evidence from the Language Skills Capacity Audit, will also play a significant role in implementing the Assembly's strategy.
