Introduction
promoting a greater national capability in language and culture skills for business and employment
hyrwyddo gwell sgiliau cenedlaethol mewn iaith a diwylliant ym myd busnes a chyflogaeth
Welsh companies are losing business in international markets through lack of language skills and intercultural understanding (Welsh Assembly Government – Wales Language Skills Capacity Audit 2002).
- 19% of the internationalising companies have lost business;
- 20% of businesses have experienced cultural barriers;
- 42% of businesses have encountered language barriers.
Based alongside our sister organisation CILT Cymru, and supported by CILT, the National Centre for Languages, LN Cymru works with key partners to implement the Agenda for Action published as part of the Language Skills Capacity Audit which complements Wales' National Modern Foreign Language Strategy, Languages Count.
LN Cymru offers professional assistance to help Welsh Business:
- develop language skills;
- develop knowledge of other business cultures;
- improve business performance in international markets;
- link with language service professionals;
- publicise case studies highlighting best practice.
Working in close co-operation with businesses, language service providers and partner organisations LN Cymru is building a thriving network to continue to develop national competitiveness.
Linking businesses and providers
The LN Cymru website aims to provide the business community with a central point of contact to facilitate and promote communication between businesses, language service providers and key players throughout the country.
The decline in business language skills in Wales mirrors a similar decline identified in other parts of the UK. The work being carried out by LN Cymru is also being replicated in other areas under an initiative by CILT, the National Centre for Languages in a bid to increase trade in international markets. The Regional and Language Networks Project brings together 12 networks across the UK. To find out more visit the CILT website.
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart .
