Institution: Hove Park School
Introduction:
Students follow the ASDAN programmes as opposed to taking two
languages as it is felt that this best supports the language
learning needs of the students.
For the International
Award, students must undertake 12 challenges, totalling 60
hours, to complete a successful portfolio. The challenges Hove
School have created include exploring fairtrade, researching global
warming and writing a dual language children’s book.

Description of lesson — preparing a presentation
on another country
Teacher: Jamie Fries
The video clips below show good practice in the teaching of
students who are building up a portfolio of evidence for the ASDAN
International Award. The learners are 13 year old students at Hove
Park School, learning presentation skills as they prepare a brief
introductory presentation in English on a country which interests
them. These students are preparing for the award as an alternative
route to studying a second foreign language.
The ASDAN
International Award accredits up to 60 hours of activity in the
international arena - language study, foreign travel, international
links, exchange programmes, work experience abroad, European
studies and global citizenship.
The lesson
Preparing a presentation on another country
This introductory lesson focuses on preparing a presentation on
another country. The students are learning presentation skills and
then giving a one minute presentation on a country of particular
interest to them. This activity is working towards Module 1 of the
Award, International Awareness, where one of the possible
challenges is to prepare an illustrated talk on another country.
This activity is then logged in the ASDAN student book and signed
by the teacher who has witnessed the presentation. Notes of the
presentation, a PowerPoint printout, video or photographic evidence
would be acceptable as evidence. You can view a
sample page from the student book on the ASDAN website.
Other challenges for the award can include some development and use
of foreign language skills.
