Context
CoPE International is a course that staff at the school created
originally by making a hybrid from ASDAN’s Certificate of Personal
Effectiveness challenge-based portfolio-assessed Level 2 and
Level 1 qualification and its International
Award Scheme. The combined course is equivalent to a GCSE grade
B if completed at level 2 or grade E if completed at grade 1.

Year 11 students from the
class
In this clip, Year 11 students describe in detail the
content of their portfolios for the CoPE International Award
including how the group learnt Spanish, and one of the main
challenges in the portfolio which was a trip to a partner school in
Spain. This clip will be particularly useful for schools
planning to introduce the International Award with their students
or for those with portfolios already in progress.

In this clip, the same students give a detailed
description of their experience of learning Spanish. The
independent student-centred approach gave them the opportunity to
plan both the portfolio tasks and their own learning of the
language to meet targets they had set for themselves. The students
also describe how beneficial the trip to Spain was and how much it
motivated them to want to learn Spanish.
