Institution: John Cabot Academy
Context
John Cabot Academy is a successful
independent school serving Bristol and is situated in Kingswood in
the North East of the City.
Originally a City Technology College, it opened its doors for the
first time in September 1993 and enrolled 150 Bristol students aged
eleven. The design capacity of this purpose-built secondary school
is circa 1,000 to cater for students aged 11 to 18 years. John
Cabot CTC was one of the first fifteen schools in a programme that
has led to the development of well over two thousand specialist
schools.
The Academy is designed for a maximum of 160 students per year
group in Years 7 to 11 along with a sixth form of 240.

Interview with Crista Hazell
In this video clip, Crista Hazell, from John Cabot
Academy explains why the British Airways Flag Award was
introduced as a form of accreditation for all of their students in
Year 9 in French, German and Spanish. She tells how the award
has motivated the students and improved their confidence in
speaking and how this has had a very positive impact upon numbers
opting to study languages at KS4. Crista explains what the
test involves and also describes the motivating effects of visiting
the British Airways Community Learning Centre.

Flag Award. In this clip, the students explain what they enjoy
about working towards the British Airways Flag Award and what they
have to do for the test.
Some of the students then demonstrate
delivering public announcements in French which is one of the tasks
they have to do for the award.
