Principles of teaching

Planning activities for younger learners
Students who are working towards the Language Leaders Award will need to be taught how to plan a series of activities for younger learners. Teachers may wish to design a proforma which can be used by their students and some students will need considerable guidance. Students may work individually, in pairs or in larger groups on the planning and delivery of their activities.

Delivery of the activities
Having planned the activities, students will then need practice in delivering them. A good way of beginning is to deliver a brief teaching activity to their peers and then for students to give each other feedback as well as the teacher offering some guidance and tips for improvement. The ultimate aim may be to go into local primary schools but further practice can also be gained within the secondary school context if KS4 students work with younger learners in KS3.

Resources
Students will want to create their own teaching resources to deliver the language. Use of ICT can be encouraged here in the production of flashcards, PowerPoint presentations or Task Magic games. Guidance will be necessary to ensure that the resources are of a good quality and clear for the younger language learners.

Use of praise and rewards
Students will also need advice on giving praise and rewards to the younger pupils in order to motivate them. Teachers should ensure that the Language Leaders are familiar with appropriate target language vocabulary so that they can praise the younger learners in the target language.

Organising and running a language festival for younger participants
Having developed individual skills as Language Leaders, the organisation and running of a language festival for younger learners will give students an even greater opportunity to work in a team situation. It is important to allocate a team leader and ensure that all members of the team have clear roles and responsibilities. The organisation of a larger event will take time and it is important to allow sufficient planning and practice time if the event is to be successful.

Language Leaders at Harris School have organised handball matches and have helped with the organisation and running of Bastille Day celebrations and the Year 7 Languages Day which is held every March. Read the case study.
