Diplomas and work-related case studies
Business meets languages event
Key objectives:
- To promote language learning by emphasising the importance of
languages in the world of work.
- To increase uptake of languages in KS4 and post 16. The
event involved pupils from four schools in years 9 and
10.
- To foster partnership between schools, higher education and
local businesses
Languages in Additional/Specialist Learning of the Creative
and Media diploma
The school has introduced Asset Languages into the Diploma ASL.
This is timetabled with Post 16 Enrichment so that this course has
a mixture of Year 10, 12 and 13 students working together.
The positive effects of collaboration - collaborative
clusters to develop alternative accreditations and languages in the
Diplomas
The aim of establishing a 14-19 Learning Network in Hampshire was
to address the issue of transition in the context of language study
and so promote high-quality and appropriately varied provision
across the county.
The Diploma in Engineering with
French
The plan was to run
French with the Diploma and involve Sixth Form Science students as
St Augustine's is a Science and Maths Specialist College. Therefore
it has developed into an Engineering project with French and
Science.
French for the Higher Engineering
Diploma
This pilot group of 11 students in key stage 4 are currently
studying for their Higher Diploma in Engineering and are taking
French NVQ level 2 as additional units. The students will take part
in a two week work experience in France in the summer as part of
the course.
German in the Hospitality and
Catering Diploma
A small group of 8 students who initially found languages
challenging are taking Level 2 NVQ language units linked to the
Higher Hospitality and Catering Diploma. The series of lessons
and resources have been produced are designed specifically to
complement this Diploma line.
Work-related learning 
Forty-one students gained the ABC qualification as part of the
taster course, a 100% success rate. Whilst there was initial
resistance to the language element from some students, they soon
began to enjoy the course and appreciate the opportunity to gain an
extra qualification.
Vocational languages case studies
Using
target language and realistic contexts with beginner students of
Spanish for Air Cabin Crew 
Once they begin, the students rarely drop out as a strong
importance is placed on their language learning. The Spanish course
is funded using enrichment funding. Although the students are
non-specialist language learners, the whole course is delivered via
the target language using activities relevant to the vocational
context.
Motivating boys in language learning, Spanish for Motor
Sports 
Once hooked, the students' attention has been maintained by
learning materials which are themed and relevant to each student’s
interest such as business, travel and motor vehicles. The teaching
methods include games, step-by-step booklets and online resources
via the college’s MOODLE site.
French for hairdressers and bakers
Vocational Languages are offered across the curriculum as an
integral part of a range of vocational courses including Leisure
and Tourism, Hospitality Management, Business Enterprise and
Catering.
Business link with Brittany Ferries for Applied GCSE
French
The aim was to offer real situations through links with local
business for students to develop their language skills in line with
the vocational specialism.
Widening the vocational offer in languages and achieving
vocational specialist status
The key objective was to offer a GCSE course relevant to students
and in line with the vocational specialism.
Making Languages our Business
The project has produced a series of fun one-day events which
emphasise the importance of languages in the world of
business.
Your Future in Languages event
The event
aims at Year 11 able linguists across the Isle of Wight who may be
considering pursuing their language studies post 16 but are not
convinced that it is the right decision for them.
'Enterprise in any language' to enhance
motivation 
'This project gives young people not only the
opportunity to practise using their language skills but allow them
to develop the key qualities of future entrepreneurs which our
society requires to keep the country competitive.' LA 14-19

Using the Work Placement Toolkit on a work
experience placement
All the pupils were extremely enthusiastic at the end of the trip,
their confidence levels and self-esteem had soared, their
linguistic competence and cultural and business awareness had risen
dramatically and they were all keen to repeat the experience.
Language Enterprise project
The project emphasises the importance of languages in the business
world and allows students to gain advice from bilingual business
people in Kent. This should lead to a greater awareness of the role
of languages in business, the development of skills required in the
world of work, and the motivation to work hard as they start their
GCSE course.
