Teacher: Brigitte Holt
The video clip shows Brigitte working with a Year 10 GCSE
Spanish course familiarising them for the first time with the
assessment criteria for the oral examination. In the preceding
lessons, use of different tenses had been focused upon and the
students had produced a PowerPoint presentation about this which
they had presented to their peers. The purpose of this exercise was
to raise awareness of the importance of including a range of tenses
in their work in order to attain the highest grades.
As a homework task, the students had then worked in groups to
produce a video and written script based in a leisure context
taking care to include a range of tenses in their work. These were
then shared with the class in the lesson. All of the class had
access to the assessment criteria, scripts and video extracts
produced by every group. The groups then assessed their own work
and the work of their peers using the Edexcel GCSE assessment
criteria and discussed together how the criteria had been met. The
teacher then collected the opinions of each group on the board.
By making the criteria transparent to the students from the
outset, they are clear what they needed to do to achieve their full
potential. This class is a top set and it is important to note that
less able students would need a more detailed explanation with
examples of good language for each category. As a homework
task, the students had to improve the scripts.
