Administrative procedures
With a modular course there is much more paperwork to complete than
in a conventional GCSE and there are deadlines to be met throughout
the course. It is important to have a clear overview of the key
dates for each module and to understand what is required so that
the necessary arrangements can be made within the school or
college.
Module 1
For Module 1, students need to make a recorded monologue. This
must be completed under supervision. This could be done during
lesson time, supervised by a support person or during after-school
or lunchtime sessions.
These recordings should be marked by the teacher in line with
assessment criteria provided by the exam board and appropriate
documentation will be provided by the exam board upon which to
record the marks. It is wise for time to be spent in the school or
college standardising the marking of these recordings. It is
especially necessary if teachers are new to the
course. Moderation of the spoken work will take place and a
sample will be requested by the exam board. The sample must be sent
off to the moderator by the date specified by the exam board and
the marks for all students must be submitted to AQA. For full
details on what is required, it is important to read the specification.
Module 2
Module 2 is an external test in reading and listening which
students will sit in June of the first year of the course (usually
Year 10). The school or college will receive notification of
this and it is important that the date is made known to parents
immediately so that there are no planned absences when the exam is
scheduled. All scripts should be posted off in good time to
the marker allocated together with any accompanying documentation
provided.
Module 3
Submission of the written coursework takes place in December of the
second year of the course. A sample is requested in a similar way
to module 1. It is important to follow the instructions in the
specification and to include the centre declaration sheet,
candidate record form, coursework comments sheets and written
stimulus materials with the sample sent for moderation.
Module 4
This module covers all four skill areas. It is important to consult
the specification and any further guidance provided in order that
the appropriate materials are sent to the correct
addresses.
Normal procedures should be in place for the sitting of external
examinations in all four skills, including the particular
requirements, with which schools and colleges are familiar, for the
conduct of oral examinations.
Resits
It is possible to resit Module 1, Module 3 and each tier of Module
2. For full information on this, consult the specification.
It is important to note that in order to qualify for the award
of GCSE in this course, it is essential for candidates to have
entered all four modules.
