Case study
Institution: Durham Johnston School
Introduction
The main impact on students has been on their motivation. A lot
of the set lacked motivation at the beginning of the year and find
French hard. Using ICT and video has been inspiring for some and
they do not give up on difficult tasks as they might have done
initially.

The lesson
In this Year 10 mixed ability
GCSE lesson, students are working on laptops which have been
brought to the classroom from a mobile storage and recharge
trolley. This enables ICT to be used in regular classroom
situations.
The teacher begins the lesson by using a simple starter activity on
his home-produced
worksheet where students have to identify the English for
some French words which they will be encountering in the French
music video which will be the focus of the lesson. He then
goes over the answers with the students so that they are prepared
for the video activity which follows.
Prior to the lesson, a music video was selected by the teacher.
This was “Deux
Pieds” by Thomas Fersen, an animated video posted on
YouTube
The students then watch the video together on the
interactive whiteboard and tick off items on their worksheet as
they see them. Not all of the items are on the sheet so the
students need to watch carefully.
The students then move to working on their own laptops which
have a version of the video on them produced in Windows
MovieMaker. The worksheet
has a number of differentiated activities on it which enables the
students to work at their own pace. The teacher regularly
draws the whole class back together to check on
progress.

This clip shows a later point in the lesson where the students are
moving on to a more challenging activity on the worksheet,
focusing on verbs used in the video. The students are
encouraged to work with their peers on this activity. The teacher
checks progress at the end of the activity with a quick team game
on the interactive whiteboard.
The class then moves on to the most challenging
activity of the lesson which involves re-ordering small video clips
so that the song is in the correct order. The teacher
provides the students with the full script
of the song in French and an English
version if needed. In this way it is possible to
differentiate and to provide support to the less able.
