A consistent approach
Ensuring that the target language is being used consistently across all classes within a school requires planning. The Head of Languages may choose to have a team of people who are responsible for creating classroom signs and posters in the range of languages taught, to ensure that all staff have the tools they need to help them in their use of target language. Smaller versions of these posters could  be produced and stuck into students’ exercise books so that they can be readily referred to at all times.

A list of common expressions teachers may use when correcting and giving feedback on oral and written work could be devised. Again, all staff could have a copy and ensure that these expressions are used consistently by everyone. A student version of the list could be produced which could be put into exercise books.

A number of companies produce posters in a range of languages which can help to encourage use of the target language. Find out more on the resources page.

Continuing professional development
Devoting time to training staff in the use of target language will be time well spent and should result in raised standards. Materials exist to enable departments to work on this together. Find out more on the resources page.

Some staff may still lack confidence in use of the target language and they may need more support in terms of training or observation of good practice. Local authorities and independent training companies often offer courses in use of target language.

Working with other schools in the area on a joint initiative to encourage target language use could also be very effective.
