Key Stage 3 - National Strategies update
The National Strategies are pleased to announce that they have been given the remit to carry out the renewal of the Framework for teaching modern foreign languages: Years 7, 8 and 9.
The renewed framework will be an addition to the existing secondary Frameworks website which hosts the English, mathematics, science and ICT frameworks. This will ensure that a consistent approach is taken and that this Framework reflects the emphases in the new secondary curriculum on key concepts, processes and skills.
In addition, the renewal of this Framework will be carried out in alignment with the KS2 Framework for Languages. Colleagues on the writing and reviewing team have experience of working with learners at both key stages and account will be taken of the work which is currently happening in primary schools.
The development will be managed by a DCSF Steering Group which convenes for the first of its 5 meetings on July 18th 2008. The current plan is for draft materials to be trialled in five local authorities throughout the autumn and spring terms and there is a structure of user and consultative group meetings to consider work in progress throughout the writing period.
The planned timescale is for the Framework to be introduced to local authorities as part of the KS3 MFL Dissemination and Development Programme regional network meetings in June 2009 and to go live for use in schools from September 2009.
In addition to the renewal of the Framework itself, two online modules, Using the MFL Framework and Planning lessons will be renewed and will be available at the same time as the online Framework. A new Creativity module is also being developed and will be available during the spring term 2009. All of these modules will sit on the NS site with the existing materials at: www.nationalstrategiescpd.org.uk/mfl.
