Language skills and key aspects of
learning
This project has made us consider how to
equip all classroom teachers with the skills to confidently get
children to understand what transferable language skills are and
also how to ensure that all Year 7 children build on existing
language skills and make good progress. We have looked at
strategies for achieving the above point in a unitary authority
where children from one primary school may go to ten or more
Secondary schools and Secondary schools will take children
from ten or more primary schools.
Key areas of work were to work towards looking
at the development and transition of transferable language learning
skills from KS2 to KS3 embracing the key aspects of learning such
as creative thinking, motivation, social skills, self awareness and
many more.
Impact
Methodology has been influenced in both Key Stages taking the best
of both and putting it into practise. The primary children feel
confident about the skills they are equipped with for lifelong
language learning which they can transfer to their KS3 lessons.
They also feel a sense of pride in what four years of language
learning has equipped them with and feel motivated about continuing
with language learning. On the other hand, discussion in the
Languages department in the Secondary school around primary
languages and skills they bring with them into Year 7 has
increased. Read more
