Learning
networks
Two projects which would influence
each other and eventually lead to a flow of good practice
in strategic thinking and patient planning have been set
up. Links between the two projects are the adviser and advisory
teacher both of whom work in both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. A
lot of strategic thinking and patient planning has been used
in this project.
In primary languages, they are working towards full
entitlement across Key Stage 2. There is both anxiety about
the level of linguistic competence needed in order to meet the
outcomes proposed in the Key Stage 2 Framework, and uncertainty
about what to look for in order to recognise and promote good
progress. However, primary teachers are used to the principles of
assessment for learning.
In secondary languages, specialist teachers
have expertise in shaping young linguists and good subject
knowledge. The schools involved in the project are outward
looking departments who are keen to promote language learning and
to sustain the enthusiasm of Year 7 pupils and build upon their
attainment and achievement when they arrive.
Once the secondary schools have agreed a joint programme of study,
the learning contexts will be adjusted to take into account the
experience of pupils coming into Year 7. More primary schools will
be invited to participate in the Honeycomb project and we hope to
set up cells or clusters of schools where pupils will collaborate
in their language learning. Their electronic profiles will show
their achievements in oracy, literacy and intercultural
understanding mapped against the statements of the ELP.
Secondary Strategic Learning Networks will further develop the new
schemes of work, based on the Key Stage 2 and 3 Frameworks, using
primary planning techniques. Resources for all schools will be
placed on the primary and secondary learning platforms currently
being developed. Amendments to the current scheme of work for Year
6 will introduce new contexts which will be revisited in Year 8
with more challenging and sophisticated language. They hope
that parents will continue to be involved and that school governors
will be made aware of the successes of the project to date.
