Making it all manageable
Driffield cluster
was in the last tranche of East Riding schools to start primary
languages the delivery in a formalised way in 2005. It is a
cluster of one secondary and 15 feeder schools. It has followed the
East Riding curricular model of cross-phase planning and delivery
by primary school teachers.
The secondary languages department has
provided regular language up-skilling. There are two years delivery
of French and Spanish in KS2. The cluster has been highly
successful in a very short period of time; this is due to the
excellent support given by all Headteachers in the cluster and the
strong relationships built between the primary school, the cluster
coordinator and the secondary languages department. They already
have clear direction as regards SoWs and now well placed to look at
how assessment can become part of the teaching cycle.
Key areas of work for this project are:
To analyse possible assessments methods to aid transition and
inform progression
To investigate existing assessment materials e.g. ELP and Languages
Ladder
To examine the possibility of an assessment portfolio to ensure the
progression of language skills in the delivery of two languages at
KS2
To produce guidelines for an assessment portfolio
To produce an assessment booklet for the cluster, based on
discussion findings
Impact
Involvement of primary colleagues to raise awareness of different
forms of assessment
A recognition that assessment for languages can be part of the
learning process and will marry well with the AFL agenda already
well-embedded in the primary agenda
Secondary colleagues will gain greater insight not only into
language content acquisition, but also the language skills
developed by pupils at KS2. Read more about this project

During 2008-09 the clusters
focused on using KS2/3 Framework for Languages to
promote smooth transition and ensure
progression
The South Hunsley
cluster was the first cluster in the East Riding to introduce
primary languages in a formalised and strategic way in 1998. It
comprises one secondary school and 7 feeder primary schools.
The cluster took part in the Good Practice project and was
one of the recommended curricular models.
The South Hunsley cluster is well placed to
investigate how the KS2/3 Frameworks and QCA KS2 SoW can be used to
ensure progression and aid transition from primary to secondary
school. Initially languages were delivered in Years 5 and 6,
but this has now been extended to Years 3 and 4.
Key areas of work:
- To analyse the KS2/3 Framework for languages
strands and objectives to identify aspects of commonality and areas
for development
- To link the KS2 Framework and QCA SoW for KS2
with cluster resources
- To adapt and revise the Year 7 SoL to
acknowledge prior learning.
