As the UK winners of the Starwatch ‘Fit like your champ’ competition, which involved 38,000 schools in language learning and health and fitness projects, a team of five girls from Bury Grammar School Girls (BGSG) enjoyed a trip to Germany during the World Cup.
The winners received their award at the Young and free youth festival in Munich, met German boy band US5 back-stage and were treated to a VIP screening of the Germany v Italy semi-final in the Olympic Stadium. |

The World Cup is a great opportunity to engage students, particularly boys, in some stimulating activities. This marriage of sport and languages is an increasingly popular one not just in the UK, but across Europe.
Starwatch was an initiative
to engage young people in the UK, Germany, Holland, Italy and the Czech
Republic in language and fitness projects linked to last year's World
Cup. There was also a competition
with winners attending a Finale event in Munich.
Resource packs are still available to anyone working with students aged 12 to 18 in the UK.
CILT, the National Centre for Languages was the UK partner in Starwatch, an EU-funded project which used the 2006 World Cup to promote languages, fitness and healthy living. The project was co-ordinated by German publisher Zeitbild.
What were the goals?
We hoped the initiative’s link with football and the 2006 World Cup would motivate students (aged 12-18) to enjoy discovering other European languages and cultures and become more aware of the importance of their own eating and exercise habits.
What is in the resource pack?
The resource pack contains a series of fifteen 'football, nutrition and fitness' worksheets and a starwatch competition poster as well as links to the international Starwatch website, key vocabulary, a language quiz and information about the featured football stars.
