Key areas of work
This is a flexible cross-phase project (sequence of lessons) that
could be delivered either at the end of KS3 or during KS4. Ideally,
however, it could be started at the end of KS3 and further
developed at the beginning of KS4. The project draws from the
content of the 2004 film Das Wunder von Bern, which
focuses on the performance of the German football team at the 1954
World Cup. The film, however, also deals with family relationships
as well as the austerity and political uncertainty of post war
Europe.
A priority has been to use the film in such a
way to develop student empathy and intercultural understanding. We
are also working on activities to challenge cultural stereotypes.
Thematically, the project addresses human relationships but could
also be the catalyst for a range of diverse creative outcomes. The
major foci linguistically are the recycling of high frequency verbs
in the past tense, the comparison of past and present time frames
and the drilling of emotive language.
