Modern Foreign Languages and Intercultural Understanding

Project leaders: Nikki Perry (Cheshire West and Chester LA) and Sam Lee (Head of MFL, Neston High School)

Key areas of work
The aims of this project have been to:

  • Develop our understanding of the term intercultural understanding and to explore the difference between this term and cultural awareness.
  • Build a series of lessons around these findings focussing on the renewed Key Stage 3 Framework Objectives.

We found that the key to this project’s success would be to recognise that it is vital to move away from 'cultural awareness' (endorsing stereotypes to some extent) and showing our students how French people live their lives, identifying the similarities and differences in French culture by comparison with British culture.
