The intercultural understanding substrand 3.1
Appreciating cultural diversity was the focus for this
project. There are three objectives for this substrand, one
per year, as follows:
- Year 7: Investigate an aspect of life and compare with
their own, noting similarities and differences.
- Year 8: Identify and explain an aspect of life that has
changed over time.
- Year 9: Develop and communicate an in-depth understanding
of an aspect of culture that they have identified and
researched.
(Renewed
Key Stage 3 Framework for Languages, Department for
Education)
As pupils had not had much experience of
learning in this strand we focused on the year 7 and year 8
objectives initially. The focus group was again a year 9 group most
of whom had opted not to continue with French. It was decided that
this group were a particularly challenging group and that if the
project could motivate them this would indeed be proof that the
context was engaging.
