Thinking of becoming a teacher? (Secondary)

Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)
The GTP is an employment-based route where on the job training and subject specific support are combined with professional duties in the school. The GTP is a one year programme for graduate trainees who have the maturity and relevant experience to cope with a demanding teaching load at the same time as their training. The training leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on successful completion. CILT runs a GTP for native speakers of French, Spanish and German.

Registered Teacher Programme (RTP)
The RTP is for non-graduates who have successfully completed 2 years of higher education. If you have a school willing to employ you, the school would need to work with a local higher education insitiution to ensure you receive suitable training to degree level. The programme leads to degree level qualification and QTS and usually lasts 2 years.

How to apply

You should contact your local employment based initial teacher training provider (EBITT). You can find a list of these by region on the TDA website. Some EBITTs, for example the CILT GTP, may be able to help you find a school to train and work in, whereas others expect you to apply with a training school in mind.
