Our Graduate Teacher Programme
offers schools the opportunity to train new
Languages teachers who are native
speakers of French, German or Spanish.
What some of our partnership training schools said about the CILT GTP in 2007-08:
"It has constantly provided us with enthusiastic, creative GTP trainees whose input cannot be underestimated."
"It has ensured that we are aware within MFL of changing requirements, latest teaching and learning pedagogy and look at our own teaching and learning."
"I, as a mentor, really enjoy being a part of this great programme."
"Thank you. I have enjoyed working with CILT this year!"
As a partner school you:
- Receive a grant of between £14,500 and £18,200* (dependent on your location) towards your Graduate Teacher’s salary

Trainees
- All trainees are graduates. Many have Masters level qualifications.
- Most trainees have experience of teaching in England, their own country or another country.
- Most trainees offer a second teaching language in addition to their mother tongue.
- All of our trainees have a high level of spoken and written English.
Schools may apply to train a particular candidate, eg their Foreign
Language Assistant, or may choose a trainee from those pre-selected by CILT. All
trainees are only accepted onto the programme following a rigorous selection
process. Further information here.
The training year
Trainees are employed by the school from September to August on a one-year,
unqualified teacher's contract.
They are employed as an additional member
of staff and are given a phased programme of teaching over the course of their
training year. By January they will normally be teaching 80% of a 4-day
timetable supported by experienced teachers. (Full guidance will be
given).
Training lasts one year and leads to Qualified
Teacher Status.
Training is co-ordinated by CILT, working closely
with a mentor in the school's Languages department and with the school's Initial
Teacher Training Coordinator ("Senior or Professional Mentor"). In addition to
their school-based training, trainees attend 15 core training sessions at one of
our three training centres at CILT in London and at the
Universities of Birmingham and Sheffield. All trainees have a personal CILT tutor.
Other professional benefits
A programme of professional development is provided for mentors at our training centres in London, Birmingham and Sheffield. Other professional development opportunities will be available to partnership schools, including free training in using ICT in the MFL classroom.

Financial
The CILT GTP is funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools
(TDA).
CILT pays the training school a salary grant as a contribution towards the cost of the Graduate Teacher's salary. The amount of the salary grant is set by the TDA and varies according to the location of the school.
For 2009-10 the GTP salary grant is:
£14,500 - national
£17,150 - outer London
£18,200 - inner London
The salary grant is payable in three tranches over the course of the training
year.
In addition CILT pays the mentor an allowance of £1000.
Training Partnership Agreement
A Training Partnership Agreement will be agreed by CILT, the training school and the trainee prior to the start of the training year. This sets out in detail the responsibilities of each member of the training partnership. A copy of the Training Partnership Agreement is available here.
