The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an Employment Based
Initial Teacher Training (EBITT) route where on-the-job training
and subject-specific support are combined with professional duties
in the school. The GTP is a one-year programme for graduate
trainees who have the maturity and relevant experience to cope with
a demanding teaching load at the same time as their training.
Your training on the programme will be tailored to your own
individual needs and successful completion of the programme leads
to
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The GTP route is offered by many providers,
including universities, school consortia, local authorities and
other organisations including CILT. CILT runs a GTP in secondary
languages for mother tongue speakers of French, German,
Italian, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
Some EBITT providers will help you find a
school in which to train, and some require you to secure your
own school placement before you can apply. You can find details of
providers and their entry crieria on
www.tda.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/teacher-training-options/gtp/Search.aspx.
QTS awarded through the GTP route has exactly the
same validity in England and Wales as QTS
awarded with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education
(PGCE), but please note that QTS through the GTP route is not as
widely accepted in other countries as the PGCE.
Entry requirements:
- UK Bachelor’s degree or recognised
equivalent. If your degree is from another country, check whether
it is recognised with the training provider or UK NARIC.
- GCSE (grade A* - C) in English and Maths
or recognised equivalents. If your qualifications are from another
country, check whether they are recognised with the training
provider or UK
NARIC.
