Registered Teacher Programme

The Registered Teacher Programme (RTP) combines work-based teacher training with academic study. It enables non-graduates with some experience of higher education to gain a degree and qualify as a teacher. Your training provider works with a local higher education institution to devise a programme of training that is tailored to your needs. The RTP generally takes two years and leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Entry requirements

  • You must have completed the equivalent of two years of higher education. This is the equivalent of 240 Credit and Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) points. For example, you may have completed an HND, a DipHE, or the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree. If your qualifications are from another country, check whether they are recognised with the training provider or UK NARIC.
  • GCSE (grade A* - C) in English and Maths or recognised equivalents. If your qualifications are from another country, check whether they are recognised with the training provider or UK NARIC.

Funding

  • You are paid on the unqualified teacher pay scale.
  • The school may receive a grant of up to £9,100 to cover the cost of your two-year training programme.
